Maintenance and evolution of the WebGIS platforms of the 11 Lezíria do Tejo municipalities, including modernisation and the move to WayGIS.
The context
Running a geographic platform shared by 11 municipalities means securing continuity of service, technological coherence and the capacity to evolve, all at once. The system supports different areas of municipal activity, from consulting spatial plans and issuing location plans through to civil protection, infrastructure and industrial zones.
The work
Waymotion’s collaboration with the Comunidade Intermunicipal da Lezíria do Tejo began in 2016 with the maintenance of the municipal WebGIS platforms. In the following contractual cycles, the engagement came to explicitly include corrective and evolutionary development, user support and the delivery of improvements and new modules.
From 2022, this evolution took on a new dimension. The progressive replacement of the existing modules with a simpler, responsive, mobile-ready interface was set in motion. New forms of interaction with residents were also planned, namely the self-service issuing of location plans and of documents resulting from cross-referencing with the PDM, as well as integrated search and the management of maps and geographic services through QGIS.
This path led to the adoption of WayGIS, which in 2025 became the formal framework for the municipal and intermunicipal WebGIS platform. The transition preserved the existing functionality while bringing in a renewed architecture, support for interoperable geographic standards and services, closer attention to security and controlled mechanisms for data migration, testing and go-live.
What it left behind
More than securing the continuity of an existing solution, the engagement represents a progressive modernisation of the Lezíria do Tejo geographic ecosystem, keeping a common base for the 11 municipalities while adapting it to the new needs of council services and citizens.
