The context
The Planos Regionais de Ordenamento Florestal translate forest policy into the territory, identifying potential, constraints and management models suited to the characteristics of each region. Drawing them up requires forest knowledge, spatial planning, environmental assessment and a significant volume of geographic information to be brought together.
The work
In 2016, Waymotion joined the consortium contracted by the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas to prepare the strategic documents, the map sheets and the environmental assessment elements of the PROF for Centro Litoral, Centro Interior and the Algarve. The consortium brought together Instituto Superior de Agronomia, ERENA, Waymotion and DOISECO.
Waymotion took on the GIS and cartography component. The work covered the preparation of the geographic working environment, the processing and cross-referencing of data in QGIS, the harmonisation of the file structure, the production of thematic and summary cartography and the creation of metadata following the MIG profile of the Direção-Geral do Território.
Across the different phases, map sheets were produced and revised covering, among other themes, land use, the forest regime, public and community areas and sensitive forest areas. Changes in the source information also required data to be updated, maps to be reproduced and successive consistency checks to be carried out.
What it left behind
Completed in 2019, after the revision and consultation phases, this work stands as a reference for Waymotion’s ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and to turn complex geographic information into coherent, documented cartography fit to support instruments of territorial management.
