Processing, loading and harmonisation of the geological and mining information of mainland Portugal into a 1:25 000 database under a single legend.
The context
The geological information of mainland Portugal is the result of work carried out in different periods, at different scales and in different contexts. The diversity of criteria and classifications used poses challenges to integrating the data and to publishing it as a coherent representation of the national territory.
The work
Between 2022 and 2025, Waymotion took part in the processing, loading and harmonisation of the geological and mining information held by the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG, the national laboratory for energy and geology). The work included the continued geometric and geological harmonisation of the vector mapping at 1:25 000 scale and the classification of the geological units under a single legend, also contributing to their publication on the GeoPortal and to meeting the requirements of the INSPIRE Directive.
What it left behind
Over this period the work evolved, covering the processing of the data, the consolidation of the information and the development of the technological instruments needed to manage and publish it. This reference reflects Waymotion’s ability to bring together specialist knowledge, geographic information and technological development in building a coherent base for understanding and representing the geology of mainland Portugal.
